A Punk Rock Education
It was a punk rock education, by way of the band covering The Buzzcocks Singles Going Steady, the entire album, in order, at the Happy Village bar in Chicago, as part of the 2004 Scooter Rally. Knowing the album, I was thrilled at how spot-on the covers were. They managed to have the energy of the originals as well as being note-for-note perfect. Bryan commented that he had seem The Buzzcocks, and The Buzzcocks weren’t as good as these guys. I thought the band was Mega Super Ultra but the website describes the players as “members of MegaSuperUltra, Window Nine, and Doctor Mars,” Tom Shover on Guitar and Vocals, Liam O’Mally on Guitar, Vocals, and Keyboards, Mike Stirk on Bass and Vocals, Kevin Martensen on Drums and Vocals. Why cover a whole album? Apparently the unwashed masses need to learn what good punk is, and these guys are going to teach us by presenting Singles Going Steady to us as a historical document. Last year they did The Clash’s first album. A good choice, I wish I had seen them last year. I know I’ll try to see them next time.
So my question for you is…
What albums would you consider part of a Punk Rock Education? I would include Singles Going Steady, The Clash The Clash and London Calling, Sex Pistols God Save the Queen, Minor Threat Complete Discography, X-Ray Spex Germfree Adolescents, something mid-80’s hardcore like 7 Seconds Walk Together Rock Together, X Los Angeles, Dead Kennedys Fresh Fruit For Rotting Vegetables, The Damned Damned Damned Damned. That’s my list, so far.

After the show, I told Tom that “Damned Damned Damned” was my choice for next year, and he said he’s already in a Damned cover band called The Darned. My top five punk(ish) albums, not in order:
Buzzcocks, Love Bites
Ramones, Ramones
Damned, Damned Damned Damned
Ted Leo/Rx, Hearts of Oak
Minutemen, Double Nickels on the Dime
Fugazi, Repeater
Mekons, Rock and Roll
Gang of Four, Entertainment
Cub, Betti-Cola
Gaunt, I Can See Your Mom From Here
